This November, tenth-grade students from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of East Harlem got an up-close look at careers and work life at Estee Lauder Companies (ELC).
TYWLS at the Workplace is a signature volunteer event coordinating a meaningful day of connection and networking for students at partner companies. Throughout the day, students get to meet employees from the company and learn about their jobs and what it’s like to work there. While ELC has been a longtime partner in hosting TYWLS at the Workplace, this was only the second time students have had the opportunity to visit the company’s headquarters at the GM Building!
Once there, students learned about Mrs. Estée Lauder’s history, products, and brand and got a tour of the company’s new archival space. Afterward, TYWLS students had the opportunity to meet with ELC employees who are members of the Hispanic Connections Employee Resource Group (ERG) and were able to ask questions about their education and career journeys. Employees offered some amazing advice to our students:
- “Know where you’re going, know what you want, know what makes you happy. Chase experience, and think – will this make people hire me in my next job?”
- “Mentors are important; make sure you choose someone who you connect with, someone who can guide you.”
- “Never stop thinking big; ask a lot of questions.”
- “Stay connected! You never know where your next opportunity is coming from; think about what’s next; be curious; be tolerant of imperfection; celebrate the small successes; build your network from day one.”
Many thanks to The Estée Lauder Companies for being a partner and supporting our work in educational equity!
