The Young Women’s Leadership School of Brooklyn Class of 2020 ● Baruch College Class of 2024 ● Business Management student and College Transition Coach (CTC), CollegeBound Initiative
During my senior year, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world. Still, I was able to build a close relationship with my College Transition Coach (CTC) in high school and she encouraged me to attend Baruch College since she was a student there, too. I also went on to build a relationship with the director of college counseling (DCC) at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Brooklyn, Jessica Michaels, and am now a support system for her and TYWLS students.
I am a proud first-generation Ecuadorian-American. I am a second-year SEEK student at Baruch College majoring in Business Management with a minor in Law and Policy and am set to graduate in June 2024. I am especially passionate about Youth Advocacy and Organizing in order to help low-income transgender and women of color. These groups often face challenges in their pursuit of education and gender equality in an effort to achieve their financial goals.
Education is about our ability to show empathy towards each other. I always saw that I could become a legacy, a reflection of what children of color could be if they only have the chance.
In addition to my studies, I am a proven peer leader through my experiences as USS Alternate Delegate for City University of New York, College Transition Coach for CollegeBound Initiative (CBI), Community Dean for Sadie Nash, and Community Outreach Co-Chair for She’s The First. I was motivated to participate in these programs for the sense of community and empowerment present in these spaces. Through these leadership experiences, I have been exposed to diverse groups of people and this has made me adapt quickly and gain a broader perspective. I am always curious about learning new things as I believe this makes a person well rounded – and I hope to keep investing in myself.
My academic path and leadership experience have helped me establish my motivation to pursue becoming a civil rights lawyer, fueled by my personal experiences and passion for social change. With the power of understanding policies, I want to advocate for education issues so children and young people have all the resources they need for a chance to have a better future.
During college, I hope to gain access to a wide source of information, be able to learn from experts, engage in discussions, and meet new people who will expand my horizons. I also want to use my empathy, writing skills, and creativity to become a better person. This will also allow me to meet like-minded people, who I want to partner with and make a change in the world. Education is about our ability to show empathy towards each other. I always saw that I could become a legacy, a reflection of what children of color could be if they only have the chance.
