Elevating Student Voices with TYWLS Astoria

Seventh grade students Yadiira and Karina, with The Young Women’s Leadership School of Astoria teacher Greg Zimdahl, presented about building agency through student-led conferences (SLCs) that take the place of traditional parent-teacher conferences. They joined a national panel of education experts hosted by Aurora Institute, a K-12 education advocacy organization.

“A few weeks before our SLCs, we’ll start by doing our portfolios, talking one on one with our teachers, and say let’s see how we can get better in reaching an outcome we’re struggling on or that we want to practice more on,” shared Karina.

“Another way we prepare is by doing practice SLCs with our classmates. We have our portfolios open and share out, kind of like how we’d do it in a meeting with our adviser and our parents,” said Yadiira.
