NY1 features Cameron S., a senior at a CollegeBound Initiative partner Williamsburg Prep High School, as Scholar Athlete of the week. The media company offers an academic scholarship award of $1,000 for each of the students to use towards college expenses.
For Cameron, there’s nothing like baseball.
At the age of 10, his uncle taught him how to play the game, and it’s stuck with him ever since, even going on to become the captain of the varsity baseball team at Williamsburg Prep High School.
But it’s not just the love of the game that brings him back, it’s also a love for his community.
“Right now, we are working on a project for a carnival so we can raise money to help bring food and water to homeless shelters around the neighborhood,” he said.
Soto also strives to keep straight A’s and is a National Honor Society inductee who juggles a tough schedule. Meanwhile, during the summer months, Soto continues to guide and mentor younger children by working at a summer camp.
With graduation fast approaching, Soto said he is looking to continue playing baseball in college and is excited for the future.
“Next year, I plan to study finance at Baruch College. I also plan to join the Baruch College baseball team,” he said. “I’m really excited for the future; I’m really excited for what’s ahead.”
