Future change makers from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Queens visited Apollo Global Management to go behind the scenes with various leadership teams. As part of our TYWLS at the Workplace series, companies invite our students into their offices to gain insights into different roles and career paths within an organization. Onsite visits help broaden our students’ early career awareness and plant the seeds for future college and career goals.
A leader in asset management and retirement solutions, Apollo’s success begins with its people. A study by Deloitte showed that in the global financial services sector, women held only 21% of board seats, 19% of C-suite roles, and 5% of CEO positions in 2021. Stephanie Drescher, who was recently named to Barron’s 100 Most Influential Women in U.S. Finance list, is a Partner and Chief Client and Product Development Officer at Apollo. She also serves on the board of Student Leadership Network and was a key connector in making this event possible for our students!
Kicking off with a panel discussion, Christine Bave, Partner and Deputy Head of Sustainable Finance, and Loretta Shaw-Lorello, Managing Director & General Counsel of Fund Formation, joined Stephanie in sharing the experiences that led to their current roles and practical tips for succeeding in their careers. Stephanie emphasized the value of finding both mentors and sponsors, where the former advises you, and the latter can advocate for you to take on projects and leadership roles to move up in your career.
Students gained additional insights about changing career paths and what it’s like working at Apollo in small group conversations. “I was able to learn many things about the corporate and financial world that I didn’t know prior to this event,” shared one student, while her classmate was excited to hear that a job is “not just working in an office, you can work from your house and do Zoom meetings!” TYWLS Queens students wrapped up their visit with lunch and a tour of the spacious office.
In addition to the onsite visit, several Apollo employees have volunteered for Cool Careers, Potential Paths career days at various TYWLS locations and facilitated an elevator pitch workshop at Student Leadership Network’s Future Success Symposium. Many thanks to Apollo Global Management and the Apollo Opportunity Foundation for their ongoing partnership and support of our mission to advance educational equity!
