TYWLS at the Workplace: Early Career Awareness with Deutsche Bank

What does a typical day at a financial services firm look like? Deutsche Bank, a longtime supporter of Student Leadership Network, invited students from The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Astoria to join them and find out! As part of our signature TYWLS at the Workplace early career awareness programming, students practiced networking with employees from the company, learned about their jobs, and heard about the college and career choices that led to their current roles. Deutsche Bank has hosted TYWLS at the Workplace events since 2014, and we are delighted to be back this year!

Discovering a Variety of Financial Services Roles

While a top financial services firm like Deutsche Bank has teams that specialize in investments and financial management, other departments are also needed to keep a company running well. Volunteers from their wealth management and credit teams joined the students to share about their day-to-day work and how they chose their current fields. Following the panel, Deutsche Bank’s employees answered questions from students in an informal, small-group setting and led a tour of the trading room floor.

Developing Students’ Professional Skills

The Deutsche Bank visit also incorporated practical activities for students to develop their professional skills. “Speed mentoring” sessions created opportunities for students to practice self-introductions and networking skills. Keionnah B., a high school senior, reflected on the value of elevator pitches. “We learned that the elevator pitch isn’t only for networking events. You can use them… for college, a job, an internship, or scholarships. This is something that is good to have memorized because if you find someone with a career that you want to do… it’s in your back pocket.”

About TYWLS at the Workplace

As part of our TYWLS at the Workplace series, companies invite our students to their offices to gain insights into different organizational roles and career paths. Onsite visits help broaden our students’ early career awareness and plant the seeds for future college and career goals. Thank you to our partners at Deutsche Bank for their enthusiastic support of our programs.
