CollegeJourney: Expanding Our Reach, Deepening Our Impact
Since 2021, our CollegeJourney program has been a game-changer for students, particularly first-generation college-goers. The program connects our graduates with mentors called peer leaders who are Student Leadership Network alumni, helping them to thrive once they enter college. CollegeJourney aims to decrease college dropout rates by fostering a sense of belonging, offering practical skills development, and providing ongoing support to students who may otherwise not have access to such resources or struggle to navigate the challenges of higher education on their own.
Last year, 95% of surveyed students agreed that the program helped them stay in college. Building on this success, we’re excited to announce the expansion of CollegeJourney from a one-year to a four-year program.

Our college persistence program team recognized that by extending our breadth of programming across all four years, we ensure students have a trusted resource at every stage of their college career—from freshman orientation to the senior year job search. This comprehensive approach allows us to foster both practical skills and meaningful relationships throughout the entire undergraduate experience.
At the heart of CollegeJourney are our peer leaders—upperclassmen who have successfully navigated similar challenges — who light the way for new students. They provide one-on-one support, lead workshops, and create a sense of belonging that transforms the often isolating college experience into a shared adventure.
Pamela Jones, our Director of College Persistence, explains: “The magic happens when you see these young leaders in action. One moment they’re confidently leading a workshop on financial aid, the next they’re simply being present, sharing a laugh or a word of encouragement with the other students. It’s this blend of mentorship and genuine connection that makes CollegeJourney special.”
Our peer leaders, many of whom are first-generation college students themselves, bring a level of relatability that is invaluable to incoming first-year students. They embody the success that is possible with the right guidance and determination.
One of our peer leaders who graduated in 2021 from The Young Women’s Leadership School of the Bronx, Ermina, shares: “Having the ability to become a peer leader is a rewarding experience, and I am so grateful for this role. I am constantly learning how to help others advocate for themselves in their first year of college, and it’s inspiring to see how many ambitious and amazing people I’ve met since then. I am certain that my students will succeed in their college journeys, and I am happy to help them in any way I can!”
As we look to the future, we’re committed to deepening our impact. With your continued investment, we’re creating an environment where young people can flourish, forging connections and building the skills they need for success.
